Vietnam had no golf courses from the mid-60's until 1994, when foreign firms began investing in courses as joint ventures with the Vietnamese government. There are now 7 courses in Vietnam, including Vietnam Golf & Country Club outside Saigon, where I played in September 2002.

We were at the course before dawn, teed off at 5:45, and finished in just over two hours without ever running into another group. A young Vietnamese man was my caddy, and Mom along rode in a golf cart to watch and take pictures. The course, designed by Jack Nicklaus, was very nicely conditioned. At $70 or more for a round of golf, this place is only frequented by travelers and wealthy businessmen.
