a bald eagle checking us out We donned our wet suits and pushed off, with no wind at all to hold us back. The predominant wind in this area is from the west, so we wanted to get finished before the wind picked up in the afternoon, as it often does. In the old days we would paddle with found pieces of driftwood, but as a concession to old age we each brought a paddle this time.

A bald eagle flew over us before we had gone a hundred yards. This seemed to be a good sign.
