Construction of the raft proceeded swiftly. We scrutinized every available log along about a half mile of shoreline, then rolled the four best candidates into the water and floated them to a central location. After some testing and discussion we settled on three logs, a long one in the center and two shorter ones on the sides. After lashing them together with electrical wire and rope, we nailed a few boards across the top and mounted a 2x4 vertically to hang our food and water in a dry spot well above the water's surface. Our goal was to build a raft that would be quick and easy to maneuver, instead of a huge diving platform like the monstrosities we had constructed as kids.
