Most people don't know that Nepal has jungles with tigers, rhinoceroses, monkeys and other animals, because this low-lying part of Nepal near the Indian border gets much less attention in the West than the high-altitude Himalayas up along the northern border with Tibet. If you want to see this part of the world, one nice option is Tiger Tops, located close to the Terai River in the heart of the national park.
We photographed this rhinoceros and many others while touring the jungles of Royal Chitwan National Park on an elephant. The elephant handler spoke no English, but was extremely observant and helpful about taking pictures. When I would raise my camera, he would communicate to the elephant through some type of gesture with his bare toes (tucked in behind the elephant's ears) that it was time to stand still. The elephant would stop and stand perfectly still, then as soon as they heard the click of my camera we would start moving forward again in the elephant's lurching gait. The rhinoceroses and elephants seemed to get along, neither one the least bit afraid, so we could approach quite close at times.
