There were law-enforcement personnel all over Southern Mississippi, from all over the country. I spoke to officers from Florida, Mississippi, Ohio, and Indiana, and saw many other states represented as well. They were in squad cars, on foot, riding horses, or on ATVs like the two sheriffs above. These guys made me leave Pass Christian after I had talked my way past a checkpoint on Tuesday.
The John Knox fire station in Gulfport, not far from Melba's house, had its tin roof blown off in the storm, and it wrapped around the telephone pole out front. After spending over a week on other people's problems, they got around to removing it with a cutting torch.
A curfew was in effect every night throughout the Gulfport area. It started at 6:00pm when we first arrived, then it moved to 8:00pm. We were out a little after the curfew most nights (in a car) and nobody stopped us, but there were flashing blue lights everywhere.
