Military

I don't know the nuances of military uniforms, so I don't distinguish between the various branches of armed forces. I think most of the people in camoflauge uniforms were National Guard, but I'm not sure. In any event, there were two places where we ran into these guys all over the place: they directed traffic at major intersections, and they handled most of the checkpoints for controlled-access areas such as Pass Christian and Waveland. And they were also in the air above us: Gulfport was a constant din of generators and helicopters, night and day.

We had heard that looting was especially bad in the Bay St. Louis area, probably around the more expensive homes down along the waterfront. In that area, the soldiers at checkpoints often had their guns in hand while checking vehicles and IDs.
