Gloria's Apartment
previous page next page Katrina home page

Gloria's first look at her apartment after the hurricane. It was structurally intact, but the contents had been flooded in the polluted water of the storm surge. The water seemed to have flowed through here much more violently than at Granny's houses, so the apartment was full of broken glass and smashed-up posessions.

Megan and I spent a couple hours digging through the wreckage, but all we could recover was a few pieces of jewelry from her bedroom. I'm hoping somebody can go back and do the same with the back bedroom, because she has some more jewelry in there that she'd like to recover. The good news is, she probably doesn't have to worry about looters — it's such a mess that it's lots of work to recover anything, and if you don't know where to dig you could dig for hours without finding much other than soggy insulation and debris.

Here's the bedroom as we found it, and after two hours of throwing soggy debris out into the hallway.

And here are a few more photos of our time at Gloria's apartment ...

There was some mail in her mailbox, the last mail delivered before the flood, so Gloria went through it looking for anything of value.
