These girls live at an orphanage in the Mount Kailash area of New Delhi called Udayan Care. This organization provides a stable nurturing home for girls who have been abandoned or orphaned in the Delhi area; for more information check out their web site, where you'll find the life stories of some of the girls in this picture (taken in 1999).
The girls on the right are holding photographs of our two dogs at the time, Mia and Trouble. I explained to the girls that Mia and Trouble liked to lay in the snow during Chicago winters, and the woman who runs the home, Kiran Modi, helped explain what snow is since none of the girls had ever seen it.
