Chandigarh is the capital of the Punjab province, northwest of Delhi. It is India's newest large city, having been built in the early 1950's after Indian independence from England in 1947. In order to build Chandigarh, several villages in the area were demolished, and a local man named Nek Chand got the idea to build a huge park of sculptures created from the demolition debris.
The result was a 40-acre site known as Nek Chand's Rock Garden, where this photo was taken. These sculptures are made from broken chinaware. Others include human figures made from strands of wire and animal figures made from electrical outlets, many of them positioned against backdrops of concrete rebar or shattered drain tile. A stream flowing through the park has been re-routed over this area to provide a constant waterfall.
