We continued the long wait for the cops to come. Fish lay in the front window the whole time.
It turned out that the long wait was due to an unusually short-handed staff that day. Only three officers were working all of Sam sector, the area bounded by Orcas on the north and Tukwila to the south, between I-5 on the west and Lake Washington on the east. And they had a shooting near the 3900 block of Rainier. So getting to our burglary wasn't really a priority.
Before I got home, though, I really tried to get a cop on the scene. Maybe too hard — the tape of my 911 call is probably pretty amusing. But I felt like the dispatcher was being vague, and in recent days we had seen cops sitting around talking on various occasions, and they had time to pull Megan over two days before for expired license-plate tabs. So the notion that they were suddenly understaffed and busy with violent crimes — however true it might have been — was a hard thing for me to accept.
While Fish waited, I told Megan I felt like driving around Rainier Beach and getting a photo of a cop sitting at a coffee shop or something while we waited. "You do whatever you need to do for your art, Dear," she answered.
I looked in all the usual spots nearby, the Saar's parking lot, Vince's Italian Restaurant, the McDonald's, but couldn't find a copy anywhere. Came back home and had another Cosmo.
