Hotel Nacional has changed little since it was built in 1930, and is still popular with travelers from many nations. Like all major hotels in Havana, it is owned and managed by the government and Cubans are not allowed on the hotel grounds. This is the place where the American mafia had a major reunion in 1946, with Frank Sinatra providing the entertainment.
Hotel Nacional is considered a five-star hotel in Havana, but most Western tourists will find the service and accommodations to be less than impressive. According to Lonely Planet Cuba, "subtract one or two stars from Havana hotel ratings" to make them more in line with American expectations. What Hotel Nacional does deliver, however, is fascinating architecture, a convenient location, views of the Malecon, and a decadently relaxing atmosphere that includes everything from Cuban cigars and delicious daiquiris to live peacocks wandering between tables on the patio.
