The massive fort of La Cabana, with Del Morro lighthouse (right) in the background. Miami is 90 miles away, straight ahead.
La Cabana was built by the Spanish after the British easily sacked Havana in 1762. After the completion of this huge fort, Havana was the most well-protected city in the Western Hemsphere. The King of Spain said that he spent so much money on it that he should be able to see it from Madrid with his telescope. The British never took Havana again.
On the other side of the fort, a row of cannons guard the entrance to Havana's harbor.
