The fishing village of Chrong Kneish, a few miles south of Siem Reap on the shore of the Tonle Sape lake, has many homes like this one. The village moves twice a year, due to the radical changes in the shoreline of Tonle Sap, and these people relocate every six months. Their home during the dry season is further out on the lake.
Their home during the monsoon season, pictured here, is near the hill of Phnom Krom, at the outer edge of the lake's annual growth. The photo to the right is the view of the monsoon-season village from the top of Chrong Kneish. This area is dry land during the dry season.
The road to the top of Phnom Krom is a bit of an adventure during monsoon season. It's just dirt and occasional gravel, washed out in many places with deep ravines through the road. Our driver, Pisith, had to be very careful with the car, but we made it fine. Since Reth (our guide) wasn't sure of the route, we stopped and picked up a tiny 11-year-old named Rout who rode along and showed us the way to the top, where we had the view to the right.
